Deep Cleanings
Dr. Safari understands the importance of healthy gums as well as teeth, she is very focused on evaluating and diagnosing Periodontitis (gum disease) early. During your comprehensive Initial or checkup exams if you exhibit signs of gingivitis (red bleeding gums) or more advance Periodontitis (gum disease) such as localized or generalized inflammation, bleeding, deep probing pockets, bone loss, and tarter under the gums, you will need a deep cleaning (scaling and root plaining/ SRP). This procedure is usually performed with local anesthetic in order for you to be comfortable and for your dentist to use ultrasonic and hand scalers to clean the root surfaces and deep under the gums to thoroughly remove tartar and inflammatory tissues. After your deep cleaning is completed, localized time released antibiotics called Arestin may be placed in areas around teeth with pocket probing depths of 3-4 mm or more. Gum disease is a very serious problem and has been linked to serious systemic diseases such as heart disease; it’s also the major cause of bad breath and tooth loss in most patients. Fortunately, if Gum Disease is diagnosed and treated early can be reversed, improved, and managed. Deep cleanings, antibiotics and treating gum disease early can reduce the need for more extensive and costly gum surgery. Call our practice and set up an appointment with Dr. Safari to check your gums to prevent Periodontitis and gum surgery.
What You Can Expect
During your checkup visit, Dr. Safari will start with a thorough cleaning, which involves removing any stubborn plaque and tartar build-up, and brushing and flossing your teeth. After your cleaning, Dr. Safari will then examine your mouth, checking for signs of major problems, such as cavities, gum disease, decay, bone loss, and even oral cancer. Not only does a regular cleaning keep your teeth and mouth healthy, but it allows potential problems to be detected, and treated, before they have a chance to affect your health. We will also take a digital X-ray to detect problems that can’t be seen with the naked eye. Once your exam is complete, Dr. Safari can answer any questions you might have and recommend at-home oral hygiene practices.
